7         WHAT ARE COOKIES AND HOW DO WE USE THEM?

7.1        When we provide services, we want to make them easy, useful and reliable. Where services are delivered on the internet, this sometimes involves placing small amounts of information on your computer or mobile phone. These are known as cookies.

Cookies cannot be used to identify you personally. They are small files which are sent by websites and stored on your device. They collect information about how the website is being used by those accessing it and allow websites to remember information.

7.2       These pieces of information are used to improve services for you through, for example:

enabling a service to recognise your device so you don’t have to give the same information several times during one task;

recognising that you may already have given a username and password so you don’t need to do it for every web page requested;

measuring how many people are using services, so they can be made easier to use and there’s enough capacity to ensure they are fast;

7.3        On our website we use cookies to collect information on how many visitors there are to different parts of the website, which helps us keep our site up to date.

7.4        Most devices will automatically accept all cookies. However, you can change your browser settings so that cookies are refused. Guidance on how to change your settings can be found at the website referred to above or look at the “help” menu of your device. Please be aware however that blocking cookies may hamper the website’s functionality or restrict how much of the website you can access.

7.5       You can manage these small files and learn more about them at www.allaboutcookies.org. There is also a cookies awareness video about how to control cookies on the website stated above.
