WINCHESTER WRITERS’ FESTIVAL

Winchester Writers’ Festival is an acclaimed celebration of literary talent. The festival aims to inspire, support and facilitate networking between writers. Expect a creative and dynamic atmosphere at The University of Winchester between Friday 16th and Sunday 18th June 2017.

The 2017 Winchester Writers' Festival is set to be an incredible three days with a keynote speech from Lemn Sissay MBE, speeches from a range of acclaimed speakers including Cliff McNish and an exciting range of writing competitions.

At No.5 Bridge Street, we love great writing and welcome a festival that celebrates and supports literary talent. Our Winchester Restaurant is looking forward to welcoming festival visitors for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner throughout the festival. Visitors to our restaurant can choose from a delightful range of British-influenced dishes and an eclectic drinks list.

The Winchester Writers’ Festival Events

Visitors to The Winchester Writers’ Festival can expect to enjoy speeches from acclaimed writers, writing courses and evening events.

The events that we are most looking forward to include:

Keynote Speech By Lemn Sissay MBE

The acclaimed poet Lemn Sissay MBE will be delivering the keynote speech on Saturday 17th June at Winchester Writers’ Festival. His published work includes articles, records, broadcasts, public art and plays. Lemn’s poems have recently been broadcast on BBC Radio Four as Lemn Sissay’s Origin Stories. The keynote speech will conclude with questions from the audience and a book signing.  

The Architecture Of Stories Course

If you have wanted to find out how to structure your stories, this course will be perfect for you. During this course you will find out how to create a useful structure that supports the plot of your story. The course will use specific examples, a range of exercises and group discussions. Novelist Elizabeth Enfield will lead The Architecture of Stories course.

Friday Evening Activities – Free And Open To The Public

The Winchester Writers’ Festival will be free and open for the public on Friday evening. Join the festival for their four free events between 19:45 and 23:30. Visitors to the Friday Evening activities will be able to choose from three exciting activities, which will be followed by open mic readings. 

10 Minutes Of Hellos

Vanessa Amberleigh, the presenter, writer and executive producer will present a talk entitled ’10 minutes Of Hellos’, the talk tackles the myths surrounding writing for children’s TV. Vanessa will share her insider’s insight into writing a script for young and imaginative audiences.

Launch Of MA Anthology

Students from the University of Winchester will launch their MA Anthology. During this session you will be able to meet some of the students behind the anthology and listen to a selection of readings from Litmus 2017.

Meet The Editors With Mslexia

For those that seek to impress independent publishers, this activity offers a unique opportunity to find out what these publishers are looking for from aspiring writers. This session will be led by three invited editors and chaired by Mslexia’s Editor.

The evening activities will conclude with open mic readings. From 21:30 to 23:30 speakers, attendees and members of the public will be reading excerpts from their published or unpublished short stories, novels, poems or plays.

Festival Reading With Claire Fuller

Desmond Elliot Prize for Fiction winner, Claire Fuller will be reading from her new novel Swimming Lessons. You can expect an exciting book reading followed by a Q&A and book signing. This is a great opportunity to hear from an award-winning author and to ask Claire any questions that you may have.

Our Event – Acoustic Sessions

Round off the first day of the festival with our acoustic sessions. The best local musical talent will be performing live between 9-11pm.

Our Offer – Bottomless Brunch

If you join us for Brunch between 11am and 4pm, you can enjoy our Bottomless Brunch offer. The offer will allow you to enjoy bottomless Bloody Marys or Mimosas for £15 when you purchase a main meal. Terms and conditions apply.

Our Event – DJ Vibes

Join us between 9pm and 12am for DJ music and cocktails. You can expect that the music will be pumping, cocktails flowing and the place jumping.
